Zoo York is a style and social philosophy inspired by the New York City graffiti art subculture of the early ‘70s. In 1993, skateboarders Rodney Smith, Eli Gessner, and Adam Schatz founded the East Coast’s first true skate-inspired lifestyle brand; up until the early 1990s, skate culture in America was predominantly West Coast-based. The name originated from the tunnels in which the group skated, which passed under the New York City Zoo. The trio channelled creative inspiration from NYC’s rapidly evolving skateboarding, hip-hop, and graffiti scenes to produce a variety of culturally-relevant products that were dark yet gritty, just like New York City. A simple line of decks and t-shirts steadily grew into a full-blown streetwear collection marked by military surplus and urban-athletic styling that was designed to withstand the city’s rugged terrain.
