In 1978, David Jacobs (Spyder Founder) noticed that there was only one brand of race sweaters available in the professional Skiing arena. He believed that he could make a better product and sell it to the close-knit race community.

After the successful introduction of race sweaters, Jacobs added ski pants to the catalogue offering. One of his early pants design inspired the brand name "Spyder" due to the striped pads that gave it a spider leg appearance. As a passionate sports car fan, Jacobs borrowed the spelling with a "y" from the Ferrari Spyder.

Since then, the brand has grown immensely and has become the official supplier to the US Ski Team since 1989, Canadian Alpine Ski Team since 2002 and also the Jamaican Ski Team since 2009.
